How to prevent from Heat wave & Sun Stroke.

Sizzling sun and hot weather is knocking at the door with in many parts of Pakistan.

 Heat stroke also refer as sunstroke.

This warm and sizzling weather affects the business and social life. People are compel to stay mostly inside and remain in shades and ventilated place during the day, which means to stay mostly indoor from 10:00am to 04:00pm. 

Heat Stroke / Sun Stroke is due to severe heat illness and body temperature rises to 104 degree Fahrenheit or more (40degree Celsius) with state of confusion. 

Recommended is to drink plenty of cold water and beverages to overcome the heat.                                                      

It is forecasted today 01st May 2019 maximum temperature of 42degree Celsius will be observe in Karachi,

It is advised by the Sindh Health authorities and Metrological department to take precautionary measure to prevent yourself and family from heat stroke.                                                                  Within Karachi city” Karachi Metropolitan Corporation” (KMC) has raised red alert and given high alert status with in their 13 hospitals, during the heat wave spells. They will provide first aid and treatment to the needy patient.                                                                                                 Heat wave effects were observed yesterday also that is last day of the April with in Sindh and south of Punjab. Temperature observed yesterday were 46 degree Celsius in Jacobabad, 45degree Celsius in Larkana, Sukur, Rohri, Chore, Saheed Benazirabad and many more small cities of Sind. In South Punjab that is Rahim Yar Khan 45degree Celsius were observed.

Heat stroke also refer as sunstroke. This type is refer to server illness and  which result in rise in body temperature, which recorded above 40 degree Celsius  also commonly refer as 104 degree Fahrenheit temperature and above this temperature  the sufferer eyes may roll, exhausted  and within state of confusion.

Heat stroke may observe due to high temperature outside or physical exertion or working long hours outside. There are various risk factors which is observe due to heat wave, high humidity, and to those who use various drugs such as beta blocker & diuretic. This can also be observe in patient suffering from heart disease and various skin disorder.  It can be more frequent in old age people or having health problem mostly biochemical disorder.

More chance prevail with the exposure to heat and may lead to heat stroke or exhaustion during hot weather or doing vigorous exercise. 

How to prevent from heat stroke during hot and sizzling weather. 

  • We need to follow recommended guide lines.                                                                               
  • Drink plenty of water and cold drinks, especially when expose to sun in day or doing exercise and physical activity.                                                                                                                  
  • Cover your head and wear sunglasses when going out during the sun light.
  • Sprinkle water and wet your cloth and skin
  • Regularly take shower and cool bath.
  • Avoid going outside and exposing to sun during 10:00am to 04”00pm.
  • Wear light color cloth with having loose fitting
  • Do not go for extensive exercise and sports activities during the day. 

Following the above mentioned guidelines will prevent us from dehydration which means less loss of water from the body.

We have to keep close watch on children, senior citizens and people who are suffering from long term health illness such as cardio vascular disease, hypertension and diabetes. They all are liable to sun stroke and heat stroke.  .     

NHS provide detail guideline on Heat stroke and heat exhaustion.  

Exhaustion due to heat usually is not a serious issue if patient is cool down within 30 minutes.    If heat exhaustion leads toward heat stroke it is emergency and to be treated immediately

Sign and symptom of heat exhaustion which include following: 

  • Confusion 
  • Feeling of headache
  • Excessive sweating.’
  • Body temperature above 38 degree Celsius  or 103 degree Fahrenheit 
  • Paleness and having wet or damp skin. .
  • Dizziness feeling
  • Muscular cramps
  • Sign of exhaustion with rapid breathing  & high pulse rate,
  • Feeling very thirsty.
  • Feeling of cramp with in arms, stomach and legs. 
  • Feel of sickness and no desire to eat with loss of appetite  

Below mention are listed guidelines from NHS to cool down someone.

  • Immediately move sufferer in shade, cool and ventilated place.
  • Lie down and raise slightly the victim feet,
  • Provide him or her to drink good amount of water or beverage which is also OK to treat. 
  • Sponge or spray with cold water and place them in fan. 
  • Place cold pack or ice under the neck, armpit and leg which is too good. 

It of vital importance to stay with the sufferer until he / her feels better or taken care by health provider. It is important to call the emergency relief center and the victim is handed over to them for management and recovery of patient,
