A common problem in Memory loss or problem: this is needed to be asses by the physicians /psychiatrist is it Normal Aging and it is this not the case.

When memory loss prevents us from performing daily tasks and our assigned roles in life, then it becomes a health concern that needs further evaluation by physicians and psychiatrists. Ref Cleveland Clinic 05/14/2019

Understanding the memory and elderly or senior citizen. Definition as per Merriam Webster dictionary memory refers to or is defined as the power or process of reproducing or recalling what has been learned and retained” It is important, the individual ability to remember and recall old times which is linked to our families, friends and our community. If the condition is noticeable it prevents an individual from performing routine or daily tasks assigned to him or her. This is now referred to as a health concern and referred to a health care professional for further assessment and evaluation. Advice on how to proceed in the life cycle.

We need to assess and be cautious when the individual reflects o memory loss and forgetfulness. If the individual often and repeatedly forgets things that he/she use to remember earlier.  This is the sign of mental worsening or initiation of dementia. This may result in a lot of worries for the patient and you. It is time you should speak to the physician/psychiatrist experts.

The age of the senior citizen as defined may vary, as per the experts and consultants took normally at 65 years or older.

To adjudge several processes of memory such as acquiring new information, remembering and recollecting past and familiar information. Each of the procedures is interrupted which may lead to the path of forget fullness.

Researchers, define and states there are various types of memory. Each of them can affect differently as per normal aging.  

During the aging process can memory be preserved?

As per American Academy of Neurology guidelines patients have mild mental and reasoning loss and deficiency. To overcome this and maintain brain health of individuals need to follow the following guidelines:

Still and till now there are no clear-cut guidelines to slow loss of memory and weakening/deterioration of the thinking process. Following are the general rule and guidelines to maintain it and may halt further deterioration in Quality of life (QOL), such as seen in case of high blood pressure, increase in cholesterol levels, and to manage high blood sugar levels and observe in case of memory loss.

•           Regular physical activity and cardiac exercise (aerobic) for a minimum of 3 times a week for 30 to 40 minutes per day such as walking, swimming, weight training, etc.

•           Reduce stress and keep away from it.

•           Smoking to be stopped immediately. Avoid drinking alcohol or to a minimum level.          

•           Maintain recommended weight level as per BMI.

•           Be positive, search for happiness, and thank Almighty Allah to be calm and soothing effects.

•           Have enough sleep for at least 6-8 hours each day.

•           Eat a healthy and fresh diet, which is high in antioxidants and olive oil. it lowers the risk of dementia. Consume daily fruits and green leafy vegetables (Salad). Go and consider Dash diets.

•           Work on engaging the brain such as doing quizzes, puzzles, reading books, playing Ludo and card games.
